PROJECT TITLE: 264-267 Tottenham Court Road
DEVELOPER: London & Regional Properties Ltd
ARCHITECT: Quinlan & Francis Terry LLP + EPR
KEYWORDS: Marketing images; Highly detailed model; Working with hand drawn plans

London & Regional Properties approached Blink Image for the production of a marketing/planning image for a highly prestigious site adjacent to the Dominion Theatre. The architects for the exterior classical facade were Quinlan & Frnacis Terry LLP, and the architects for the areas behind the facade were EPR.

Upon appointment, we were supplied with a box of around seventy A1 and A0 hand drawn elevations, plans and sectional details for each and every element of the stone facade. Normally we receive Autocad-type electronic drawings from which to create the underlying 3D model, but the QFT drawings were exquisite: some of the best we've had for any project worked upon to date. Work began on the modelling of the facade. Each detail was translated by our skilled team into a 3D model, the accuracy of which was correct right down to the milimeter, even to the extent that every mortar joint was created in 3D.

Whilst 3D modelling was underway, our team of photographers visited site for the photoshoot. It was immediatly evident that the constraints of the road, congestion, roadworks and volume of pedestrian traffic was going to make the task of taking the photograph far from straighforward.

The final photograph is actually a composite of many different shots. Ordinarily, architectural photography tends to try to keep verticals vertical. With taller buildings, there is a tendancy for this technique to make the buildings look unnaturally distorted towards the upper floors. For this reason, we chose to tilt the view slightly to give the viewer the impression they are stood looking up at the building from the opposite pavement.

Only recently has the scaffolding been removed from the facade. It reveals a beautifully detailed, exquisitly finished building that matches the CGI we produced in every way.

"The end results even had a fellow associate who has been with the company 25 years fooled into thinking the work on site had been completed!" M.Winney, Associate, Quinlan & Francis Terry LLP
