A recent trip to Birmingham brought me face to face with a very familiar building: The Grand Hotel at Cathedral Square in Birmingham.
In 2011, Blink Image were tasked with the job of creating a vision of Birmingham's The Grand Hotel to show the building in all its former glory. Covered in scaffolding for many years, and with a partially collapsed roof, the building was in a sorry state of affairs. The public had forgotten just what a majestic, beautiful building this once was.
Without detailed plans and only a collection of historic photographs and partial drawings, Blink Image began the process of creating a very detailed 3D model of the entire building, piecing together all the intricate stonemasons carvings and the sensitively considered development drawings from Berman Guedes Stretton into a coherent, highly complex model using a combination of Autocad and 3DS Max.
Once modelled, we began the process of texturing and manipulating the model and matching it with photography taken - by yours truly - on a cold and frosty winter's morning. So cold, in fact, that I vaguely recall thawing my fingers out in an Americano from one of the surrounding up market coffee houses! Once the initial image had been created, it was used extensively in Birmingham's press and on TV to excite and enthuse the public about the future of Cathedral Square. Subsequently, further CGIs have been commissioned to explain the various façade treatments and details as the building neared construction phase.
